🥛 Homemade Ranch Dressing
Makes: about 1½ cups
Prep: 10 minutes
Best after: 30–60 minutes chilling
Ingredients
Creamy base
½ cup mayonnaise
½ cup sour cream
¼ cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons regular milk, only if needed to thin it
Seasoning
1 teaspoon dried parsley
¾ teaspoon dried dill
½ teaspoon dried chives
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the ranch "tang"
1 teaspoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon white vinegar
½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Optional — but highly recommended
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives
Tiny pinch of MSG (about ⅛ teaspoon) for that restaurant-style savory flavor
👨‍🍳 Detailed instructions
1. Make the creamy base
Put ½ cup mayonnaise and ½ cup sour cream into a medium bowl.
Whisk them together until completely smooth.
Don't add the liquid yet. Getting the mayo and sour cream smooth first helps prevent little lumps.
2. Add the buttermilk
Slowly whisk in ¼ cup buttermilk.
At this point you should have a fairly thick dressing.
If you want dip consistency, you can actually stop adding liquid here.
If you want pourable salad-dressing consistency, you'll eventually add a little milk.
3. Add the dry seasoning
Add:
1 tsp dried parsley
¾ tsp dried dill
½ tsp dried chives
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
Whisk everything together really well.
Make sure the garlic and onion powder aren't sitting in little clumps.
4. Add the tang
Add:
1 tsp lemon juice
½ tsp white vinegar
½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
Whisk again.
The lemon juice and vinegar are important because ranch isn't supposed to taste like plain mayonnaise with herbs. That little bit of acidity gives it the characteristic tangy ranch flavor.
5. Add fresh herbs if you're using them
Finely chop:
1 tablespoon parsley
1 tablespoon chives
Stir them into the dressing.
Fresh herbs aren't required, but they make a noticeable difference in flavor.
6. Adjust the thickness
For a thick ranch dip:
Don't add anything.
For normal bottled-ranch consistency:
Add 1 tablespoon milk and mix.
If it's still too thick, add another tablespoon.
Don't dump a bunch of milk in at once. It's much easier to thin ranch than to thicken it back up.
⭐ The most important step: let it sit
Put the ranch into a covered container and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes.
1–2 hours is even better.
The dried dill, parsley, garlic, and onion need time to hydrate and release their flavors.
If you taste it immediately after mixing, it may taste like mayo + sour cream + herbs.
After sitting, it becomes much more like actual ranch.
🔥 If you want it to taste like restaurant ranch
After it has been refrigerated for an hour, taste it.
Then adjust:
Too bland?
→ Add another ⅛ tsp salt.
Needs more garlic?
→ Add ⅛ tsp garlic powder.
Needs more onion flavor?
→ Add ⅛ tsp onion powder.
Not tangy enough?
→ Add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar.
Too thick?
→ Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time.
Too thin?
→ Add another tablespoon of sour cream or mayonnaise.
Too "herby"?
→ Add a little more mayo/sour cream.
Want that addictive restaurant flavor?
→ Add a tiny pinch of MSG.
🧄 My preferred version
If I were making it for wings, fries, pizza, vegetables, or dipping, I'd use:
½ cup mayo + ½ cup sour cream + ¼ cup buttermilk + 1 tsp parsley + ¾ tsp dill + ½ tsp chives + ½ tsp garlic powder + ½ tsp onion powder + ¼ tsp salt + ¼ tsp pepper + 1 tsp lemon juice + ½ tsp vinegar + ½ tsp Worcestershire + ⅛ tsp MSG.
Then refrigerate it for at least an hour.
That gives you a thick, creamy, tangy ranch dip rather than a thin salad dressing.
